Developing Hands-On Skills
CCHS’ Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program empowers students to explore their passions, develop hands-on skills, and prepare for future careers. Rooted in Alberta Education’s CTS framework, our program is structured into five career clusters:
- Business, Administration, Finance, and Information Technology (BIT)
- Trades, Manufacturing, and Transportation (TMT)
- Health, Recreation, and Human Services (HRH)
- Natural Resources (NAT)
- Media, Design, and Communication Arts (MDC)
CTS courses are made up of 1-credit modules, each equivalent to 25 hours of work. Students can earn up to 5 credits per course by completing multiple modules at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. Prerequisites may apply for advanced levels.
Course Highlights and Credits
Communication Technology (MDC)
Credits: 1-credit modules, up to 5 credits per course
Students explore video and audio production, 3D printing, digital photography, web design, robotics, and coding. This course builds creativity and technical skills essential for success in the digital world.
MakerSpace 10/20/30 (MDC)
Credits: 1-credit modules, up to 5 credits per course
Students work on advanced design, innovation, and prototyping projects, including 3D design, robotics, coding, and digital layout. Projects encourage critical thinking and hands-on problem-solving.
Construction Technology (TMT)
Credits: 1-credit modules, up to 5 credits per course
This hands-on program focuses on woodworking, joinery, and cabinetmaking. Students develop skills with tools, machinery, and finishing techniques. Advanced levels include specific skill sets for furniture and project presentations. Costs: $5 per credit, plus materials.
Commercial Foods Program (HRH)
Credits: 1-credit modules, up to 5 credits per course
Students gain culinary skills in a professional kitchen setting. Grade 10 students learn food preparation basics, while Grade 11 and 12 students tackle advanced baking, international cuisine, and real-world catering opportunities.
Applied Design 9
Credits: N/A (Grade 9 course)
This introductory course focuses on bicycle maintenance/repair and 3D design/coding. Students gain practical skills while exploring video game design, terrain park modeling, and bike care.
Environmental Sustainability 10/20/30 (NAT)
Credits: 1-credit modules, up to 5 credits per course
Students work with aquaponics systems, learning about sustainable food production by managing fish and plant ecosystems. Higher levels include business concepts related to aquaponics operations.
Personal Finance (BIT)
Credits: 1-credit modules, 3 credits available
Prerequisite: Grade 12 student, CALM 20
This course covers key financial skills, including budgeting, resource management, and understanding the economic environment—essential tools for adult life.
