Every October, high school students at Canmore Collegiate High School have the unique opportunity to participate in a life-changing adventure with the Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS). Established in 1974, SALTS operates two tall ships, the Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift, offering immersive sail training programs for young people. These experiences allow students to develop their leadership, teamwork, and resilience while navigating the stunning coastal waters of British Columbia.
An Experience Like No Other
Onboard, CCHS students become “trainees” and actively participate in all aspects of ship life. Working in three rotating watches, students take on essential roles, including handling the wheel, monitoring navigation, managing radio communications, assisting in the galley, and learning essential sailing skills like knots and sail handling. Each trainee works through the SALTS sail training curriculum, building practical maritime skills that foster independence, teamwork, and a strong work ethic.
More Than Just Sailing
SALTS isn’t just about learning to sail; it’s about life training. Students learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and work in close community with their peers. The program encourages personal growth and builds confidence as students face unique challenges—such as climbing 115 feet in the rigging of a moving ship! Through discussions and mentorship from the crew, students develop relational skills that will support them far beyond the classroom.
Adventure on the BC Coast
Each fall, CCHS students spend four or five days exploring the breathtaking Gulf Islands of British Columbia, with shore trips, games, and stories adding to the unforgettable experience. The SALTS program combines natural beauty with hands-on learning, creating memories that last a lifetime.
Inclusivity and Accessibility
SALTS is committed to inclusivity and values diversity, ensuring all young people feel welcome aboard. With a bursary program available, students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial need.
