Emphasizing Cooperation, Participation, and Individual Fitness

The Physical Education program at Canmore Collegiate High School provides students with opportunities to grow in fitness, motor skills, social skills, and knowledge related to physical activity and sport. The program emphasizes cooperation, participation, and individual fitness, with activities offered in co-educational classes.

 

Personal Fitness 15

5-6 Credits

Prerequisite: 65 per cent in Physical Education 10
Personal Fitness 15 introduces students to both basic and advanced training principles, enabling them to design and implement their own fitness programs. Students will participate in regular individual and group fitness activities to improve their fitness levels. Nutrition concepts are also explored in relation to exercise. This course is ideal for students interested in learning how to stay fit within the structure of the school day.

 

Personal Fitness 25

5 Credits

Prerequisite: 65 per cent in Personal Fitness 15
Building on the concepts from Personal Fitness 15, this course focuses on advanced fitness theory, practical application, and leadership opportunities in a fitness setting. Students explore areas such as Speed, Agility, and Quickness (SAQ) training and the creation of sport-specific or general fitness plans. The course emphasizes regular fitness training and allows students to pursue areas of fitness that interest them.

 

Physical Education 20 – Sport Performance

5 Credits

Prerequisite: 65 per cent in Physical Education 10

This course focuses on active living and life skills through sports, fitness, and leadership. Moving beyond traditional gym activities, students engage in a wide variety of sports and fitness activities. The “signature” event is a triathlon, held each semester, and other activities include yoga, dance, aerobics, massage, canoeing, golf, hockey, mountain biking, swimming, and snowshoeing. The course also develops skills and strategies in sports like volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Classes may be gender-based if numbers allow. An activity fee applies.

 

Physical Education 20 – (Co-Ed) Active Living

5 Credits

Prerequisite: 65 per cent in Physical Education 10

Designed for students interested in fitness at a low-impact, non-competitive level, this course combines fun and fitness to support a healthy lifestyle. Students will participate in team and individual sports, outdoor activities, dance, and various games, encouraging an enjoyable and active approach to physical fitness.

 

Physical Education 30

5 Credits

Prerequisite: 65 per cent in Physical Education 20
In this course, students develop leadership skills while exploring lifetime physical activities. Students lead classmates in various activities and have opportunities to lead Physical Literacy sessions for elementary students. Many activities from Physical Education 20 are revisited in greater depth, with new activities introduced. This course is ideal for students interested in pursuing Kinesiology in post-secondary studies.

Note: Students are not expected to be proficient in all areas. They are encouraged to attend class with a positive attitude and a willingness to explore new areas within Physical Education.
